A public sauna experience shaped by community and nature

The Sauna House is a proposal for a public sauna space in Talbot Place, Blackheath — open to all and rooted in the natural rhythms of the landscape and seasons. Inspired by Nordic sauna traditions but shaped for our local context, it will include a smokeless wood-fired sauna, cold plunge, and sheltered outdoor rest area.

Designed with sustainability and simplicity at its core, the experience will be low-tech, sensory, and communal — a gentle ritual to be enjoyed alone or shared.

THE DESIGN PROPOSAL - W.I.P. -

The design for The Sauna House is evolving in response to ongoing community feedback. The images shown represent the current concept, but small changes may be made as we continue to listen and refine the proposal together.

The pop-up structure is built using natural timber, chosen for its simplicity, warmth, and calming presence. It will include a wood-fired sauna, changing and storage facilities, two cold plunges, and outdoor cold showers — all designed to offer a complete and restorative thermal experience.

As a temporary installation, the structure is intentionally light-touch and respectful of its surroundings. A feature sauna window will extend through the hoarding, offering guests views across Blackheath — deepening their sense of relaxation and connection to the landscape.
